Friends Of Roman Catholic Education Fund

A Fund of The Community Foundation Of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc.

The purpose is to create a vehicle through which Donors can make charitable, tax-deductible gifts to support excellence in Catholic education within our community. A donor-advised fund at the Foundation, with permanent use restrictions. The fund may only be used for two purposes:

1) to support four designated area Catholic schools or
2) for Catholic educational programs in Greater Utica

An advisory committee with representatives from each of the four Catholic Schools shall advise the Foundation as to grants to be made from the Fund. The Fund will include four sub-funds so that Donors may give directly to a specific Catholic school of their choice.

We are truly blessed to live in upstate New York. We have just seen the beautiful colors of fall and are now privileged to enjoy the beauty of God’s winter wonderland. In the middle of all this beauty we enjoy many holidays. As of this writing, we are approaching Thanksgiving. Soon we will be rejoicing in the coming of Baby Jesus at Christmas.
St. Peter’s School faculty strives to teach the true meaning behind these holidays. We teach the children to be appreciative of what they have, so that they can share their blessings with others. As of this writing we are in the midst of our food drive. We will be giving all that we collect to Historic St. John’s food pantry.
As we celebrate the Birth of Our Savior with our Birthday Party for Jesus on December 19, we again ask our children to think of those less fortunate. Please send in on that day a donation for a family helped by Thea Bowman House. These items can include new toys as well as hygiene products such as deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, etc. You may also wish to keep someone warm with a donation of socks, mittens, hats or scarves.
At this desperate time in our economy, please remember those that have much less than you do. All of your help is deeply appreciated. Your Christmas will be merrier when you help someone else.
God bless you in your generosity and have a very, merry Christmas!

WHO’S IN CHARGE WHEN MRS. HAUCK IS NOT IN THE BUILDING?

Just in case you need to speak with someone immediately about a concern, Mr. Jones is in charge when Mrs. Hauck is not in the building. His supervisory experience at the House of the Good Shepherd makes him very suitable for this job. When Mrs. Hauck is away, he always has a way to get hold of her so that a situation can be handled in a speedy fashion.

CHRISTMAS ACTIVITIES

Advent Wreath services – Each Monday morning at 8:30, the student body will be gathering around the Advent wreath to learn about the true meaning of Christmas.
Christmas Social and Kid’s Crafting – Our students always look so delighted when they can bring home a special Christmas gift for a loved one, especially when it can surprise that loved one. That was always the purpose of Santa’s Secret Shoppe. But Santa’s Secret Shoppe was costly for families and the items were not of the greatest quality. Therefore we have decided to take a different tack. On Sunday, December 14 your child is invited to come to the school cafeteria from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. to make up to ten different craft items for gifts. The cost is $3 to cover materials. The children will also be able to wrap the gift. Mrs. Bushey and Mrs. Falchi have agreed to coordinate this activity.
Parents are invited to stay in the gymnasium to socialize. Free refreshments will be available. Santa will be in the gym and the children may come up to visit upon completion of their crafts. Dream Home tickets will be available for the first time at that event. You may purchase your ticket then. It makes a great gift for Christmas gift giving for that someone who has everything. Anyone who purchases their Dream Home ticket then will have their name entered five times in a drawing for a free Dream Home ticket. This year we will be doing the Dream Home Raffle with Rome Catholic School. Last year’s Dream Home Raffle raised over $44,000.

Children and Angels of Mary Christmas Party – Both groups will meet after school on Wednesday, December 17 for a Christmas party.

Christmas Concert – The annual Christmas concert will take place on Thursday, December 18 at 7:00 P.M. in St. Peter’s Church. Students should arrive by 6:45 P.M. Mr. Murphy will send home more specific information.
Birthday Party for Jesus – The children will have a Birthday Party for Jesus in the gymnasium at 12:45 P.M. on Friday, December 19. Please refer to the opening paragraphs for a list of items for donation to Thea Bowman House. The children will have classroom parties afterward.

Grade 3 to visit Fountain Elms – Grade 3 will see an “Old Fashioned Christmas” at Fountain Elms on December 4. Mrs. Zawada will be contacting parents with guidelines.

No Scrooge – Unfortunately Scrooge has been sold out and we cannot attend this wonderful event this year. We will try again next year.

MAIN EVENT SPEAKER ANNOUNCED

On February 5 we will host our sixth annual benefit dinner at Hart’s Hill Inn. This year’s keynote speaker will be Rocky Bleier. Mr. Bleier is a four time Super Bowl champion who almost had no football career at all. In the late 1960s, he played for the University of Notre Dame and then was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But before he could play for Pittsburgh he was drafted to serve in Vietnam. While there he was shot twice in the legs, making any attempt at a football career highly unlikely. But Rocky did not let tragedy get in the way of his dreams. Upon his recovery, he worked hard to build himself back up and several seasons later, he was in the Steelers’ starting lineup.
Come see Mr. Bleier tell his unbelievable story on February 5. Tickets are $75 which includes a cocktail hour, dinner, a personal autograph, and the presentation. It will be a night to remember.

PICTURE RETAKES

DeNicola Photography will be back at St. Peter’s to take pictures of students and staff who were absent during the first picture session. Students’ pictures may be retaken for free if there was photographer error. If you just do not like your child’s picture and would like a retake, you may do so by returning the original pictures and paying an additional $5 sitting fee. Pictures will be retaken on Wednesday, December 3 from 11:15 until noon.

KID’S NIGHT OUT

Every December we try to have a night so that we can keep your children amused while you have the opportunity to make use of several hours to do all those Christmas errand. This year we will have that night on December 5 from six until nine. Please note the special handouts in this packet. If you have no plans, we are in need of helpers for that night. Please contact the school office if you can help.

SAFETY CONCERN

With the change in the weather, our front door is beginning to shift. That means the door does not close tight on its own. When you enter or exit the building, please reach back and pull the door tight. This ensures that our students are safeguarded at all times. Thank you for your cooperation.
